Services we can arrange

Choose the help you need. Every service is delivered by an independent, qualified professional.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you need: a short description of your project, your role (builder, subcontractor, client or homeowner), the contract and the deadline you’re facing.
  2. We match you with a suitable independent professional: a solicitor, surveyor, mediator or expert.
  3. You get a quote directly from them, and decide whether to go ahead. There’s no obligation.

Facing a deadline? Payment and pay less notices, adjudication responses and NEC notifications have strict time limits. Say so in your enquiry, and don’t wait for a reply before protecting your position: our free examples may help.

Who you’ll work with

Services are provided by independent professionals under their own terms of engagement, not by BuildLaw. Depending on what you need, that may be:

  • a solicitor regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (you can check them on the SRA register);
  • a chartered surveyor or quantity surveyor regulated by RICS;
  • an accredited mediator, adjudicator or arbitrator;
  • a chartered engineer or delay expert for technical reports.

Always check a professional’s regulation and insurance before instructing them. BuildLaw may receive a referral fee from a provider, which won’t increase the fee you’re quoted; the provider will tell you about any referral arrangement.

Free and low-cost help

  • Homeowners: the Citizens Advice consumer service, and any ADR scheme run by your builder’s trade association.
  • Small claims: for most money claims up to £10,000 in England and Wales, the court’s free small claims mediation service.
  • Everyone: our free guides, case studies and example notices.

General information, not legal advice. What applies to you depends on your contract, the facts and where the work is, and the law changes. Check the sources below and take advice from a qualified professional before acting on anything that matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is BuildLaw a law firm?
No. BuildLaw publishes free information and introduces you to independent professionals. Any advice you receive comes from them, under their own terms and regulation.
How much will it cost?
It depends on the work. The professional you’re introduced to will give you a fee quote, or explain how they charge, before you agree to anything. We don’t publish prices because every project is different.
Do you help builders as well as clients?
Yes. We help contractors, subcontractors, consultants, developers and homeowners. Where there’s a dispute, we won’t introduce both sides to the same professional.
